ZIP files are something that was created in 1989 with the aim of compressing and archiving files on Windows PCs. It is very helpful to save the storage of our devices.

But, when the ZIP file gets corrupted due to incomplete downloads, interrupted transfers, or errors in the system files, it is very annoying. However, recently, when I download a ZIP file and try to unzip it, then I end up getting the repaired corrupted ZIP files on my Windows 11 PC.

Well, I got very furious, obviously just because I wasn’t able to access my important files. Fortunately, when i try some fixes, it helps me to resolve the problem. So, if you want to repair the ZIP file on your Windows PC, make sure to be with us until the end.

Method 1: Use Built-in Windows Utilities:

There is a built-in utility program available on Windows that will help you repairing corrupted ZIP files on your Windows 10/ 11 PC. So, in this type of case, the built-in Extract All feature will help. However, to use this feature, you must perform these steps:

  • Right-click the corrupted ZIP file and select Extract All.
  • Thereafter, to extract the contents of the ZIP file, follow the on-screen instructions.
  • In order to extract data from the corrupted ZIP file, Windows will try to extract as much data as possible.

This method is effective for mid-level damaged ZIP files, but it may not be effective for severely damaged ZIP files.

Method 2: Utilize Third-Party ZIP Repair Tools

You can easily repair the corrupted ZIP file on your Windows 10/11 PC with the help of some third-party tools. However, in comparision to buil-in feature that I’ve discussed in method 1, these third-party tool give you more advanced feature and chances are high that you can access your ZIP files again. Here are some of the most popular ZIP repair tools for Windows 10/11 PCs:

  1. WinRAR: WinRAR is a powerful archiver that can also repair corrupted ZIP files. It will attempt to repair the damaged ZIP file automatically when opened with WinRAR.
  2. DiskInternals ZIP Repair: DiskInternals ZIP Repair is a program that is specially designed to repair corrupted ZIP files. In order to recover data from damaged archives, it employs advanced algorithms.

So, to make sure that your PC doesn’t get attacked from malware or viruses, make sure to download the tools from trusted sources. You know what? I used the DiskInternals ZIP Repair. So, let’s check out the steps that I have performed using the DiskInternals ZIP Repair.

#1. DiskInternals ZIP Repair

As a user you can easily extract content from your corrupted ZIP archives using this DiskInternals ZIP Repair tool that is free to use. With this, you can easily troubleshoot or repair your corrupted ZIP files on your Windows 11/ 10 PC. So, let’s check out the steps:

  1. Visit the ZIP Repair homepage.
  2. To try it out for free, click Try it Free.
    Utilize Third-Party ZIP Repair Tools
  3. Use your browser’s Downloads tab to access the downloads section. Press Ctrl + J in Chrome to open that tab.
  4. To launch the ZIP Repair setup wizard, double-click zip_repair.exe.
  5. In the setup wizard, click Next, and I Agree.
  6. Click Browse, select a directory, and then click Next to choose the software’s location.
  7. After that, click Install.

To repair the corrupted ZIP file, follow these steps:

  1. Launch ZIP Repair.
  2. On the DiskInternals ZIP Repair window, click Next.
  3. Click Browse to select a corrupted ZIP archive and the Open option.
  4. To save the fixed archive, click the Browse button for the Repaired file box. To save the selected folder, click Save.
  5. To view the archived content that has been repaired, click Next.
  6. Once again, select Next.
  7. When you are finished with the wizard, select the option to open the archive after the wizard is closed.
  8. Once the repair wizard has finished, click Finish.

#2. WinRAR

There are many archive extraction tools available that you can use to either fix or repair the corrupted ZIP files and WinRAR is one of them. When you use this tool you can use the Repair Archive feature to resolve your problem with damaged ZIP files.

But, like the above one, its not a freeware. Yes, you need to pay there fees, but there are  free trial for 40 days. To repair a corrupted ZIP file with WinRAR, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the homepage of WinRAR.
  2. Click the blue Download WinRAR button.

  3. Select the Download WinRAR option.
  4. Open your browser’s Downloads tab.
  5. To launch WinRAR’s setup wizard, select WinRAR-x64-611.exe from that tab.
  6. On the WinRAR setup wizard, select Install.
  7. Run WinRAR. To launch WinRAR from Windows 11, enter it in the search utility.

Here’s what you need to do to fix the corrupt ZIP file:

  1. In WinRAR’s window, click the folders that contain the corrupted ZIP archive. You can also enter the folder’s path in the address bar.
  2. Choose the corrupted ZIP archive.
  3. Navigate to the Tools menu.
  4. Select Repair archive.
  5. Select Browse from the Repairing window.
  6. Thereafter, select the directory to store the ZIP that you have repaired and click Select Folder.
  7. If it isn’t already selected, click Treat the corrupt archive as ZIP.
  8. To repair the ZIP file, select OK.

Method 3: Repair ZIP File Using Command Prompt:

You can use the Windows 11/10 Command Prompt to execute commands and perform various tasks, including repairing corrupted ZIP files. If you have a corrupted ZIP file, here is how you can repair it using Command Prompt:

  • Firstly, to open Command Prompt with administrative privileges, press Windows Key + X and select Command Prompt (Admin).
  • To locate the corrupted ZIP file, use the command cd.
  • Enter the following command in the correct directory: ren filename.zip filename.zipx
  • Afterwards, to rename the corrupted ZIP file to a ZIPX file, press Enter.
  • To repair the ZIPX file, type: expand filename.zipx -r
  • Thereafter, to repair the ZIPX file, press Enter.
  • It is now possible to extract the contents of the repaired ZIP file after the repair process has been completed.

Method 3: Use ZIP Repair Online Service

You can also use the online ZIP Repair tool to troubleshoot and repair corrupted ZIP archives. However, you can only use this method, if the above mentioned methods didn’t work for you. Here’s how to repair ZIP files online.

  1. Visit winzip.com or zip-online.net to repair your ZIP file online.
  2. Using the online service, upload the corrupted ZIP archive.
  3. To begin the repair process, follow the instructions.
  4. If you find any errors in the fixed archive, download it and check its contents.
